EKU Student-Athletes Post Highest GPA Ever
RICHMOND, Ky. – The 2016 spring academic semester was the best ever in the classroom for Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes. More than 300 EKU student-athletes combined for a 3.179 grade-point-average, the highest single semester GPA on record.
Fifteen of 17 athletic teams posted a cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) above 3.0, tying the department record set last semester. Colonel student-athletes have now had a combined GPA of 3.0 or better for nine straight semesters.
"I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was when I first heard about the success our student-athletes had in the classroom this spring," Director of Athletics Stephen Lochmueller said. "Reaching numbers like these and surpassing previous records, demonstrates that these student-athletes are as dedicated in the classroom as they are on the courts and fields. I want to congratulate and thank all of our coaches and the student-athletes for their hard work and dedication."
Two teams posted their highest single semester GPA ever. The soccer team accumulated a 3.59 GPA, beating its previous best of 3.48 last fall. The men's basketball team set a new program record with a 2.79 GPA last fall, but beat that mark by a wide margin with a 3.01 GPA this spring.
The volleyball GPA of 3.62 was the highest among Eastern's 17 sports this spring. Meanwhile, the men's golf team was tops among the eight men's programs with a 3.50 GPA.
Fifty-five student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. Overall, 68.29 percent of the more than 300 student-athletes ended the semester with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
EKU's men's teams combined for a 3.03 GPA, which is the highest combined men's GPA on record.
A total of 62 student-athletes earned their college degrees from Eastern Kentucky University in May.
In competition, Eastern claimed its third straight Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup this year, a symbol of overall athletic excellence in conference-sponsored championships.
