28 Colonels Earn OVC Academic Medal Of Honor
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Twenty-eight Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes earned the Ohio Valley Conference Academic Medal of Honor for the 2017-18 academic year.
Two EKU student-athletes earned the Medal of Honor in two sports, bringing the total number of selections to 30. All 28 Colonels posted a 4.0 grade-point-average (GPA) for the 2017-18 academic year.
The OVC Academic Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athletes who achieve the highest grade-point-average in a conference-sponsored sport.
No OVC team had more honorees than the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team with 10.
Eastern's 28 honorees were: Jacob Abbott (baseball), Nick Howie (baseball), Abby Wright (women's basketball), Samuel Hayworth (football), Mikayla Hauck (women's golf), Sam Eastes (soccer), Sutton Edwards (soccer), Larissa Heslop (soccer), Haley Kemper (soccer), Katie Shaffer (soccer), Makenna Sullivan (soccer), Kylie Thompson (soccer), Erin Torrence (soccer), Allison Werner (soccer), Marian Wolski (soccer), Parth Aggarwal (men's tennis), Joshua Piunti (men's tennis), Sagung Augstarani (women's tennis), Alexandra Belle (women's tennis), Greyson Winiger (men's track & field and cross country), Ashley Barr (women's track & field), Darrian Botts (women's track & field), Hannah Cook (women's track & field), Caroline Hodgson (women's track & field), Maryssa Miller (women's track & field), Haley Yost (women's track & field and cross country), Chloe Rojas (volleyball) and Rachel Woody (volleyball).
EKU's student-athletes had an outstanding year in the classroom. During the fall semester, the Colonels set new program records, posting the highest combined fall grade-point-average ever (3.128) and compiling a record 56 individual 4.0 GPAs. In addition to being the highest fall GPA ever, the cumulative GPA for EKU student-athletes in the fall of 2017 of 3.128 was the second highest GPA on record for any semester.
During the spring semester, student-athletes combined for a 3.11 grade-point-average, the second-highest spring GPA ever. It was the 13th straight semester that EKU student-athletes have registered a 3.0 or higher combined GPA.
