Colonels Post Record-Breaking Semester In Classroom
RICHMOND, Ky. – The 2015 fall academic semester was one of the best ever in the classroom for Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes. A record 15 of 17 Colonel athletic teams finished the fall semester with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) above 3.0.
EKU has never had that many teams register a 3.0 GPA in one semester. The final fall GPA for all student-athletes was 3.09, marking the eighth straight semester the composite student-athlete GPA was above 3.0.
"I am so proud of our student-athletes," Director of Athletics Steve Lochmueller said. "Their effort in the classroom this semester was fantastic and it shows in these numbers. As a department, we are serious about academic success. Our Bratzke Academic Center staff and our coaches did a great job of helping ensure that our student-athletes weren't just successful on the fields and court, but in the classroom as well."
Four teams posted their highest single semester GPA ever. The women's tennis team accumulated a 3.88 GPA. The women's golf team, which one the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference championship, set a team record with a 3.66 GPA. Women's soccer (3.48 GPA) and men's basketball (2.79 GPA) also set new records this past fall.
The women's tennis team not only set a new program record for a single semester GPA, the squad's 3.88 total was this highest among Eastern's 17 sports this fall. Meanwhile, the men's golf team was tops among the eight men's programs with a 3.53 GPA. The Colonel men's golf team also captured an OVC championship in 2015.Fifty-three student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester. Overall, 62 percent of the 322 student-athletes ended the semester with a GPA above 3.0.
Twenty-nine student-athletes earned their college diplomas from Eastern Kentucky University this past December.
